Why "bad" videos will 10x your YouTube results

Everything is data collection

I was really good at math in middle school.

I’d always finish my assignments as soon as possible so I could grind a game called mine sweeper on my computer.

If you’ve never played, the premise of the game is to “clear” as much of the board as possible and without hitting a mine (which would end your game).

The goal is to do this is fast as possible, which presents a contradiction:

“How can you get good at the game quickly without making mistakes?”

You can’t.

If you’re too delicate in your approach, you’re not going to adapt and learn the game as quickly as the guy who’s playing 3 games in the time it takes you to finish 1.

I had a similar conversation with one of my friends who recently had an insane YouTube run up from 0 - 70kish subscribers in the past 8 months.

He felt like he had tapped all the content ideas in the well and was struggling to figure out “what to post…”

So I told him to double his output.

1x video a week → 2x videos a week.

This is not advice as I would give to most people (as their content just isn’t good and 0 × 2 is still 0)

But for someone with proof of concept, it’s makes sense.

He already knows how to make videos that a) get views and b) drive sales.

Now it’s just a matter of developing pattern recognition to figure out what ideas/topics consistently perform the best so he can increase his EFFECTIVENESS.

In this case, effectiveness = knowing what topics “always work” so he can put the most effort/intention into said videos

By doubling output of content, we’re also 2xing the speed at which he “cracks” winning formats which accelerates his ability to front run trends.

The CATCH is that you don’t arrive at this point without thorough testing.

You can’t develop pattern recognition without proper sample size…

And to achieve enough sample size means that you’re inevitably going to post videos that flop along the way.

This is an expectation we set with all of our clients from the jump.

NOT EVERY VIDEO IS GOING TO BE A 1 OF 10, AND THAT IS OKAY.

“Experimenting” and testing formats is a double edged sword…

If your thesis is correct, you are rewarded bigly.

If you’re wrong, you might have to sit with a “10 of 10” for a few days.

But the former is not possible without the latter.

To make a banger video, you have to accept the possibility that it might not be one.

Once you remove your attachment from making the “perfect video” and start thinking from the lens of “collecting data…”

Everything will click for you.

Start sweeping.
